Authorities report increase in debit/credit skimmers in WV

Authorities have reported an increase in debit/credit card skimmers (or jammers) in the state of WV. A card skimmer most often attaches overtop the existing card reader at a gas pump, ATM, or vending machine. The customer’s card then passes through the skimmer before entering the card reader to complete a transaction. The skimmer captures card information so scammers are able to create duplicate customer debit/credit cards or sell the information.
Skimmers can be hard to detect, and are usually camouflaged to match the machine. Prior to using a gas pump, ATM, or vending machine, check for signs of tampering. If something looks different, such as a different color or material, graphics that aren’t aligned correctly, or anything else that doesn’t look right, don’t use that machine. Also check for traces of glue residue, which may indicate a skimmer has been placed in the past.
